During the past two years, DTU Environment and Resources has been co-operating successfully with the County of Funen on developing biological and chemical clean-up methods in order to protect the ground water. A pilot study has been launched to test the methods at polluted sites on Funen.
The overall challenge is that it is not always sufficient to decompose the source of pollution, as the decomposition products might be just as dangerous. Thus it is important to ensure conversion into completely harmless substances.
This has been very demanding for the scientists; “Development of new technologies is a long haul, but because of the good working relations we think that the first real field experiences can be achieved within the next couple of years,” says professor Poul L. Bjerg from DTU Environment.
