The research work is focused on development and implementation of numerical methods for optimal design. The methods are used for rational design of mechanical structures. I am involved in the Danish Center for Composite Structures and Materials (http://www.dccsm.dk)  Another example is the FTP funded project Optimal Design of Composite Structures Under Manufacturing Constraints.
