Health Insurance
- Nordic citizens
Citizens from Nordic countries are automatically entitled to the same medical treatment as Danish nationals; they do not need additional health insurance.
-
EU citizens
EU nationals should register with the local office of the National Registry on arrival in Denmark. You are strongly advised to bring an European Health Insurance or a completed E-104 (E-111) form from your home country, which will entitle you to free medical treatment from the National Danish Health Service (note that repatriation costs are not covered).
-
All other nationalities
You are entitled to use the National Danish Health Service once you have received a social security number (it is referred to as a CPR no. in Danish). The number is obtained by visiting the National Registry upon arrival in. It will take 2-3 weeks before you receive your social security number. Non EU/EEA citizens are therefore advised to take out a private health insurance in their home country to provide interim coverage.
Your social security number is also your health insurance. A National Helath Service Card will be sent to your Danish address within six weeks of your arrival. Remember to take the card with you if you go to a doctor or dentist. The name, address and telephone number of your doctor will be printed on the card. When you have finished your studies at DTU—and before you leave Denmark—you must return this medical card to your local National Registry Office.
Liability Insurance
If you are involved in an accident that injures someone or damages their property, you may become liable for large sums payable in costs and damages. If you are not covered for third-person liability, we strongly advise to insure against it. The PF Office in Building 101F can help you find cover that will come into effect immediately you have paid for it.
Other insurances
Insurance to cover the costs of repatriation is also strongly recommended. Should you become seriously ill or die, this insurance will pay for a family member to be flown to Denmark to take you home. Finally, it is wise to insure yourself against theft.
