The PhD Programme at DTU

The PhD programme is a learning process where the PhD student learns to perform research under guidance. It is therefore important for DTU that the advisor and student know each other before the programme begins.

The PhD programme consists of:

  • a study programme corresponding to 30 ECTS points
  • a teaching and communication course corresponding to approximately three months
  • external stay(s) of research
  • completion of an individual scientific project
  • a thesis and
  • public defence of the thesis

PhD programme committee

The researcher studies at DTU are divided into five PhD programmes that may have different study course requirements. Each programme has a PhD programme committee which is responsible for the academic course of the individual PhD programme.

DTU’s five PhD programmes are:

  • Mathematics, Physics and Informatics
  • Chemistry, Biotechnology and Chemical Engineering
  • Electronics, Communication and Space Research
  • Construction, Production, Civil Engineering and Transport
  • Life Science

Graduate schools

Each PhD programme may have a number of graduate schools that attend to a specific subject area within the relevant programme. The graduate school is an organisational unit of a certain size which ensures that a large group of PhD students will have a well-constructed and coherent course of study at a high level. The subject area may be defined according to discipline, be inter-disciplinary and defined by research objective, application or method.

Individual study plan

Each PhD student must be attached to one of the five PhD programmes and follow its particular set of regulations. Thus each PhD student must have an approved study plan within the framework of the PhD programme chosen. The relevant PhD programme committee must approve the study plan.

Study programme start

At the earliest, the PhD student can start the same month as both the academic approval is given and the funding plan is approved by the Office for Budget and Accounting at DTU.
