Chemical & Biochemical Engineering

Laboratory in chemical/biochemical engineering.

The department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering offers two summer courses in process technology/unit operation laboratory:

Course 28123: The international 4 weeks course, June 29th  – July 28th . Credit according to home countrys rules, but equal to 8 ECTS points. Price €3200 (tuition and accommodation). Max 55 students. Application only by using form downloaded from http://www.kt.dtu.dk/upload/institutter/kt/summerschool/2012. Deadline March 15, 2012.

Course 28122: 3 weeks course. July 9th –July 28th. Credit 5 ECTS points. Accommodation price €300, tuition free (only EU/EEA citizens and non-EU students from partner universities). Max 15 students. Application using DTU application form to be sent to the department. Deadline April 15, 2012.

Objective

During experiments with process equipment in semi technical scale the possibilities and limitations of the theory are compared with the practical experiences. In addition an improved understanding of the processes, equipment design, operational conditions, measuring techniques etc. is achieved. Training in industrial report writing.

Prerequisite qualifications

Minimum 2 years bachelor studies in chemical engineering. Approved courses in basic chemistry (inorganic, organic, physical, analytical), process technology (process design, heat and mass balances, kinetics and reaction technology) and theoretical unit operations.

Fluent oral and written English.

Approval from home university is required. For course 28122 a list of proven courses is required.

Contents

Experimental work in teams of 2 persons. Varying number of exercises, selected among: Distillation, absorption, liquid flow and pumping, various drying technologies, filtration, membrane filtration, centrifugation, extraction, crystallisation, agitation, ion exchange, organic synthesis. The international course also contains process control and reaction engineering exercises. Reports on each exercise. Experimental work and report takes 3-4 days for each exercise.

In addition 2-3 visits to chemical production sites.

Evaluation

Discussions on the reports. Assessment: Grading (course 28123) or approved/not approved (course 28122).

For both courses see detailed course information on: http://www.kt.dtu.dk/English/Uddannelse/Summer%20University.aspx
