Sustainable Production and Consumption

 

The department of DTU Management offers a summer course in Sustainable Production and Consumption.

 

The course takes place in the period 30 July - 17 August.

 

The course is credited with 5 ECTS.

 

Price

There is no tuition fee for students from DTU partner universities.

 

Accommodation

Accommodation is offered at Campus. Accommodation fee is €300.

 

Objectives of the course

- To give knowledge on the basic concepts and methods about sustainable production and consumption, in particular product life cycle tools addressing environmental and social impacts.

- To be able to apply tools for a life cycle screening (the MECO-tool) with the purpose of achieving increased eco-efficiency in production, and tools for social life cycle screening

- To understand principles of eco-design and environmental management systems in companies for sustainable production, and the main components of government policies for promoting sustainable production and consumption

- To conduct a company study and give practical experience in inter-disciplinary and inter-cultural team work in an industrialized country in Europe

- To encourage more specialsed studies concerning environmental and social life cycle assessment

 

Prerequisite qualifications

Minimum 2 years bachelor studies in engineering. Approved courses in environmental studies.

Fluent oral and written English.

 

Content of the course

Lectures and exercises in class. Excursion and case study in teams of 4-6 persons.

The course takes its point of departure in the industrial and production related challenges to an environmentally sustainable development. Adopting a life cycle perspective, the course introduces and provides hands-on training on basic methods to improve eco-efficiency throughout the product chain from extraction of raw materials, manufacturing, consumption and disposal or recycling. Eco-design, product policies, eco-labelling and sustainable consumption practises are some of the topics given special attention in the lecture program. Through case work in companies and institutions, knowledge on these methods is deepened and practised.

 

Evaluation

12-scale, oral exam and written assignments, internal examiner. The students receive a diploma after passed examination.
