About DTU Informatics

DTU Informatics carries out teaching and research within computer science and information processing, with a focus on application within engineering science. Relations to practical problems are essential.

Computerised mathematical models play an increasingly decisive role within engineering science, i.e. within industrial production, planning and economics, the hospital sector, etc. The activities of the departments are aimed at methodologies enabling one to deal with today's ever increasing quantities of information.

Typically, research activities at DTU Informatics are based on specific, practical problems, often in close co-operation with knowledge-based companies or institutions. The research has a key position within the DTU focus area Information Technology, and is closely related to several of the other DTU focus areas.

The objective of the teaching at the department is partly to ascertain that all DTU students - in a proper way and on a sound basis - are able to apply the subjects taught at DTU Informatics, and partly to educate experts within the application areas of the various disciplines. DTU Informatics is centrally placed within the new B.Sc education in Information Technology, as well as in the M.Sc educations in Informatics and in Applied Mathematics.

At the international level DTU Informatics plays a leading role in DTU's international MSc educations Computer Systems Engineering, and Computing and Mathematics. The department educates a large number of PhD students. It operates research schools in Micro Electronics and Non-Linear Science. DTU Informatics runs external courses for engineers within information technology. Furthermore the department contributes to the teaching at the newly established IT University of Copenhagen.

DTU Informatics was established on January 1, 2001, when the following four groups were joined:

  • Department of Mathematical Modelling
  • Department of Information Technology
  • Department of Applied Electronics
  • Department of Planning.

Januar 1st, 2007 Center for Information and Communication Technologies (CICT) joined the department and organisational restructuring is presently taking place. CICT homepage
