Bakteriers stigende modstandsdygtighed mod den medicin, vi
bruger til behandling, udgør en af tidens største medicinske
udfordringer.
Min forskning har primært været rettet mod sammenhænge mellem
anvendelse af antibiotika til dyr og de sundhedsmæssige
konsekvenser, det har for sundhed for mennesker.
Forskningen er i stigende grad rettet mod globale
problemstillinger med påvisning af global spredning af resistente
bakterier og resistensgener i forbindelse med rejser og
international handel med fødevarer. Den udførte og igangværende
forskning er med til at sætte den internationale standard for
påvisning, global overvågning og studier af global spredning af
antibiotikaresistente bakterier og har stor indflydelse på, hvordan
man anvender antibiotika og kontrollerer antibiotikaresistente
bakterier verden over.
Det globale fokus viser sig også i, at den videnskabelige
produktion er udført i samarbejder med over 80
forskningsinstitutioner eller universiteter i over 35 forskellige
lande. Forskningen har også bevirket, at DTU Fødevareinstituttet er
referencecenter for både Verdenssundhedsorganisationen WHO og
EU-kommissionen inden for antibiotikaresistens hos bakterier fra
dyr og fødevarer.
