- Integration of Fluctuating Generation using Coordinated Control of Demand and Wind Turbines (pre-project)
Research Project
The power generation and distribution company for Bornholm, Østkraft, is responsible for security of supply while continuing to increase power production from renewable sources. With the increasing penetration of wind power, Østkraft is forced to turn off wind power generation during island operations to ensure frequency stability, due to insufficient load frequency control capa-bility of major CHP plants.
The solution for Bornholm type problem is to develop a method for integrating an increased share of wind power and other fast fluctuating production technologies in a power system by intelligent coordinated control of the electricity demand, provision of frequency control from the wind turbines and conventional reserves. As part of a large research project in this direction, this pre-project aims at investigating of demand side potentials and developing accordingly the simulation models for demand as frequency controlled reserve.
The expected outcomes from this project include the collection of detailed statistics and profiles of electric demands in Bornholm power system, for example the historical hourly load profile, statistics of electric heating user, potentials of large industrial users for frequency control etc. A simulation model for using demand as frequency controlled reserve and integrated with the Bornholm system should also be developed.
