Coordinated frequency control of wind turbines in power systems with high wind power penetration

Research project

The aim of the project is to develop, validate and test a method for integrating an increased share of wind power in a power system by real-time balancing the wind turbine power production. The developed solution should interplay with existing frequency activated reserves, be coordinated with demand response, and support future innovative power system architectures, e.g. intentional island operation. The developed solutions should be tuned and validated by dynamic power system simulations and tested in full-scale.

The developed solution(s) should be tested by full-scale implementation at one or several wind turbines in the power system of Bornholm island (max. load 55 MW and high wind power penetration). The developed solutions should eliminate the present shedding of wind turbines during island operation of Bornholm, improve frequency quality, enable real-time generation-demand balancing, and improve system stability.
