The present position is anchored at the DTU, Department of Mechanical Engineering, at the section of Manufacturing Engineering (MPP). MPP performs research and teaching in the field of manufacturing engineering. The research involves theoretical, numerical and experimental approaches. The main activity areas cover manufacturing processes, product and process quality control technologies and data analytics, as well as modelling approaches to all these subjects. Research and teaching are based on a multi-disciplinary use of process technology, materials science, thermodynamics as well as solid and fluid mechanics in the analysis and modelling of manufacturing processes.

The Additive Manufacturing group at the MPP section of DTU Mechanical Engineering has a vacant 3-year position as a postdoc within Additive Manufacturing (AM). The postdoc project aims through a larger research consortium to exploit new methods for the manufacturing of tooling systems for injection molding (IM) through Additive Manufacturing. Focus will be on the AM enabled process chain at a systemic level; of the AM methods applicable for AM based tooling system for IM; and on barriers to industrial implementation and validation of suitability. Research will aim to establish precision, accuracy, process capability and industrial integration of additive manufacturing as tooling technology.

Responsibilities and tasks
The postdoc will be working in the bounds of academic research and corporate industrial implementation of Photopolymer based Additive Manufacturing in order to advance where Photopolymer Additive Manufacturing can be applied within conventional injection moulding process chains. The implementation of this tooling method is to demonstrate how to foster the adoption of digitization on industrial scale manufacturing. The focus will to a high extend be to both identify and demonstrate how the digital technologies are able to add value if adopted to support the formative manufacturing process of injection moulding. The project aim to consolidate the strengths from AM, injection moulding and flexible automation while bypassing the weaknesses of AM (high cost pr. component) and injection moulding (high tooling cost). 

The postdoc must have:

  • A strong background in Manufacturing Engineering, with specific and deep knowledge in process chains at a systemic level.
  • Strong skills in the following: Rheology, Photopolymerisation, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Injection Moulding, Additive Manufacturing
  • Strong skills in cyber-physical systems and how to link materials and process between the physical and digital realms
  • A good knowledge of related technologies such as NC Machining, Polishing, Grinding, as well as within industrial cleaning processes.
  • Good knowledge in the field of Geometrical Metrology, Quality Assurance and Characterization.
  • Good knowledge in statistical modelling.
  • Knowledge within Performance Metrics for Manufacturing and Engineering Statistic.

The research project is a joint research project between academic and industrial partners. The framework in which this postdoc project is offered, is a select research consortium that amass an exclusive collaboration between some of the most innovative companies and institutions that Denmark is renowned for world-wide.

By virtue hereof, the postdoc must: 

  • Hold an aptitude for collaboration and communication, given that the project is constructed over multiple partners and related projects.
  • Have a strong knowledge the industrial implementation
  • Possess excellent skills for knowledge transfer and documentation as you will be required to transfer your knowledge to industrial partners.

Qualifications
You are expected to hold a PhD degree or equivalent within Mechanical Engineering or likewise related to Additive Manufacturing. It is expected that you have conducted previous research related to industrial collaboration or obtained collaborative skills from similar experience; ability to work independently, possess the stills to plan and carry out complicated tasks, and to be a part of a large, dynamic group. Excellent English Proficiencies, written and spoken are obligatory.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years, starting 1 December 2018.
