On 26 October 2014, the Nobel Prize winner and US Secretary of Energy in the Obama government (2009-2013) Steven Chu and Vice President for Energy and Climate in UN Foundation Reid Detchon paid an informal Sunday visit to PowerLabDK at DTU Electrical Engineering.

Lively discussions and a profound interest in renewable energy characterized the meeting. The two prominent visitors exchanged views on the future energy system with the PowerLabDK group including senior chief engineer Jens Peter Kjærgaard from Energinet.dk and several young researchers from Center for Electric Power and Energy. The discussions covered DC transmission, wind power, system security, energy storage, smart grids and electric vehicles.

The researchers were very impressed by Steven Chu’s knowledge and, not least, great interest in the transformation of the energy system to a system based on renewable energy sources – an area where Denmark is world leading. During the session Steven Chu even started developing new ideas for offshore wind farm collection grids.

A tour in PowerLabDK with presentations of the research conducted by Center for Electric Power and Energy followed before leaving the labs in the E-Box - Denmark’s first electric vehicle with so-called vehicle-to-grid capability.
