DTU Chemical Engineering invites applications for a 3-year PhD position in Methane production and carbon capture through hydrate swapping.

This project considers the problem of using carbon dioxide to produce the vast resources of natural gas locked up as solid gas hydrates in permafrost and oceanic margin zones. The natural gas hydrates are converted to CO2 hydrates, thereby storing CO2 (the major greenhouse gas) while simultaneously releasing natural gas. This so-called “swapping” process, whereby methane (the major component in natural gas) in the hydrate is replaced by CO2, allows for production of natural gas from hydrate without adversely affecting the stability of the solid hydrate.

Responsibilities and tasks
The project will involve thermodynamic and kinetic modeling of gas hydrate systems and processes as well as molecular simulation, for example to probe the formation of CO2 hydrate and dissociation of CH4 hydrate in a production/storage scenario. 

Qualifications 
Candidates should have a master's degree in chemical engineering or similar and have a strong background in computer modelling and simulation.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
