The National Food Institute (DTU Food), a department at Technical University of Denmark (DTU), invites applications for a position as Professor of Bioactives—Analysis and Application in Food Technology.

The Bioactives Research Group has a dynamic staff with high international visibility, many research collaborations with leading international universities and organisations, and a successful track record of national and international research projects.

The Bioactives Research Group focuses on activities, technologies, and processes which can improve eating quality and oxidative stability of foods that are rich in vitamins, healthy lipids, and proteins/peptides. The group also researches in the exploitation of new or underutilized resources.

Responsibilities and tasks
The professor will be expected to take the scientific leadership of the Bioactives Research Group which is one of 12 research groups in the department. Currently, the research group includes approx. 25 academics, students, and technical staff members.

The professorship is a management position through which DTU wishes to reinforce and develop the knowledge area of Bioactives—Analysis and Application. The professor is to take the lead in this area that include research, teaching, innovation, and scientific advice.

The professorship has the responsibility of developing technologies and processes, which can contribute to improving the eating quality and oxidative stability of food in order to increase the population’s intake of healthy foods rich in vitamins, healthy lipids and proteins/peptides. Specifically, the professorship will include the task of developing innovative technologies, which can secure the exploitation of new resources, particularly from waste products from the fish industry and from seaweed and micro algae. These technologies include harvesting, extraction, up concentration and fractionation of bioactive compounds, which can be applied in the food industries.

A particular focus will be on adding to the department’s involvement within food ingredients which is a strategic priority.

The professor is to strengthen the ties to other DTU departments working in the Bioactives area. A particular focus will be on bridging to other researchers within the Life Science and Bioengineering cluster at DTU. Furthermore, international collaboration and exchange of students and academic staff members have a high priority. Contribution to the development of the focus area of food ingredients may be expected.

The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising PhD students and is expected to be involved in teaching activities related to bachelor and master level students. The candidate is expected to make a special effort in regards to communicating the research findings to relevant private sectors and authorities. In addition, new teaching developments within ingredients will require the professor’s contribution and the candidate will be expected to take responsible for an international study programme called AQ-FOOD encompassing the Nordic marine sector.

Qualifications
Emphasis will be placed on the applicant’s potential to develop the subject area and on documented original scientific production at international level. Successful attraction of research funding, e.g., from private or European sources is a priority qualification.

The general qualification requirements for the position are as follows:

  • A high level of original scientific production at international level within the research area in bioactives
  • Documented track record in profiling towards external collaborators in businesses and public authorities
  • Appreciable portfolio in research-based teaching programmes and PhD supervision
  • Documented experience in research management, including handling management tasks in national or international projects, research programmes, congresses, etc.
  • Documented innovation activities, including building up patent areas, applying research results in a commercial context, etc.

Assessment
In the assessment of the candidates, consideration will be given to

  • scientific production at international level, research potential, and ability to lead and develop a research team
  • the ability to promote and utilize research results
  • the ability to teach
  • experience with innovation activities
  • an all-round experience basis, including international experience
  • the ability to contribute to the development of internal and external cooperation
  • track record in attracting funding to the research area
  • visions within the research area

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.
