Young engineer sole Dane on exclusive Forbes list

A few days ago, postdoc Andreas Hougaard Laustsen was the only Dane to be named on the prestigious Forbes list of talented people under 30 within science and healthcare.

Very few Danes find their way to Forbes magazine’s prestigious 30 under 30 lists that name the brightest young minds within ten categories, such as natural science, media, finance, consumer technology, and politics.

One of the select few to be included on one of the 2017 lists is Andreas Hougaard Laustsen, postdoc at DTU Bioengineering. He is listed among the 30 most talented young people within science and healthcare.

One of the reasons why Andreas is on the list is that at an early age, he co-founded the companies Biosyntia ApS and VenomAb IVS, respectively engaged in the development of biocatalysts for fermentation of fine chemicals and the development of snake antivenom.

Andreas about his inclusion on the Forbes list:
“It’s a great recognition to make the list—and so cool! But it’s even more important if it can generate interest and resources for my research in snake antivenom. This is one of the most overlooked pathologies in the research community and among authorities.”

Denmark’s coolest engineer
Andreas Hougaard Laustsen’s talent and entrepreneurship were already noticed a few years ago, and he and his enterprises have been awarded an impressive 30 awards! One of them he won in 2014, when he was awarded the title of Denmark’s coolest engineer in 2014.

In connection with receiving the title as Denmark’s coolest engineer, he said then:

“The boring advice is that hard work pays off—also when it comes to the somewhat dull programme courses. You need to show you have real stamina. For me, this meant that many professors and business partners took me seriously at a young age.”

The industrious 29-year-old is right now in Mumbai, India in connection with his research. His professional curiosity has previously brought him to France, Costa Rica, and Australia in the quest to make better snake antivenoms than those currently available.
