What should be uploaded when applying?

You should always read the full call text carefully to make sure you have included all the required information in your application. The full call text will always list all required information and annexes/forms. There are some basic eligibility requirement, which you need to fulfill in addition to required annexes/forms. If you do not meet the eligibility requirements, your application will be rejected without being reviewed. 

Who can help me formulate my research plan?

Applicants must have arranged in advance a research plan with a host at DTU. This means that you should contact a professor or research group at DTU prior to formulating your proposed research projects. How many fellowships are available?

The COFUNDfellowsDTU programme will fund a total of 66 individual fellows over a period of three (3) years. 22 fellowships will be funded in 2018; 10-20% of these are expected to be assistant/associate professorships.

Where can I carry out the H.C. Ørsted COFUND fellowship?

H.C. Ørsted FOUND fellowships can only be carried out at DTU.

Can the fellowships be prolonged?

Fellows can agree upon an extension of the fellowship with the research department. The extension will not be funded via the grant.

What are the eligibility criteria?

Can I apply if I work at DTU or in Denmark?

If you have lived or worked at DTU or in Denmark for less than twelve (12) months during the last three (3) years immediately prior to the time of recruitment (1 July 2018), you will be eligible for a fellowship.

How do I submit my application?

All applications must be submitted electronically via DTU’s oneline submission form at http://www.dtu.dk/english/career under ‘vacant positions’.

In what format should my application be submitted?  

Your application must contain all required annexes (please see full call text) and be submitted as one compiled PDF file. You must use the available templates provided at the website.

The page limit for the research plan is 5 (A4) pages excl. abstract ;the first page of the template with personal- and project information and the brief summary are not included in the 5 (A4) pages.

Applications must adhere to the following format: font size 10, top and bottom margins 3 cm, left and right margins 2 cm and single line spacing.

Can I submit my recently obtained PhD diploma after call deadline?

Yes. Although if you obtain your PhD degree after call deadline, you should make sure to make arrangements with the secretariat to submit your diploma as soon as possible at oerstedpostdoc@adm.dtu.dk. If you receive a grant, you must submit your diploma before employment can begin and no later than 1 August 2018.

Is it possible to update my application or to submit additional material/information after call deadline?

No. It will not be possible to submit additional material or information once the secretariat has received your application. The only exception is PhD diplomas obtained after call deadline.

When will I receive information on whether or not I will be offered a fellowship?

The decision is expected to be made in the middle of June. Offers will be made by e-mail. It is therefore important that you have access to and regularly check your e-mail at this time.

Is it possible to change starting date of the fellowship?

Yes. It is possible to agree on another starting date with the hosting DTU department. Fellowships must commence during the same calendar year as rewarded; e.g. no later than 15. Decemeber the same year.

Where can I find practical information about living and working in Denmark?

DTU International Faculty Service can provide you valuable assistance regarding a number of issues related to living and working in Denmark. Which languages are spoken at DTU?

DTU is an international university rooted in Danish culture. With 1200 international employees from more than 80 different nationalities, the majority of students, employees and researchers speak English. All scientific theses are written in English. The official language of the university is Danish.

Can I apply if I obtain my PhD diploma after application deadline?

Yes. There is no specific deadline for the submission of PhD diplomas. However, if you apply before obtaining your PhD degree you should make sure to:

  1. Include in your application a declaration from your supervisor stating when you will obtain your PhD degree. The statement must be on official letterhead from the granting university.

  2. Contact the secretariat at oerstedpostdoc@adm.dtu.dk to arrange submission of your PhD diploma as soon as possible after obtaining your degree.

If you receive a grant, you must submit your PhD diploma before employment can begin and no later than 1 August 2018.

Can I start my fellowship before obtaining my PhD diploma?

No. PhD diploma must be obtained and submitted to the secretariat before employment.

How late can fellowships commence?

Fellowships must commence during the same calendar year as they are rewarded. If you are granted a fellowship in 2018, you must therefore obtain your PhD degree prior to the recruitment date (1 July), submit your diploma (no later than 1 August) and initiate your project in 2018 (latest possible starting date is 15 December).

Can I apply if am not an EU resident?

Yes. The program is open for young talented researchers from all over the world.

Should my PhD diploma be translated to English?

Yes. Applications will be subjected to international review.

What is the salary for H.C. Ørsted COFUND fellows?

Salary will be based on the terms of the applying collective agreement including basic salary, plus supplement based on the employee’s seniority and qualifications, plus pension contribution. Fellows will be covered by the general labour market legislation as foreign employees are covered by the same rules and regulations as Danish employees. General employment conditions include a workweek of 37 hours (7.4 hours a day) and a minimum of 25 days of vacation annually. You should contact the hosting research department to inquire about the basic salary level.

It is stated that the research plan must only be five (5) A4 pages. Does the first page with personal information and brief summary count as one of the five (5) pages?

No. The first page does not count as one of the five (5) A4 pages. The research plan begins at page two (2). The document can thus consist of a total of six (6) pages.

My graduating university/latest employer does not wish to hand me their letter of recommendation directly. Is it possible for them to send it to you in confidence?

Yes. It is possible for your graduating university or latest employer to send their letter of recommendation in confidence directly to the secretariat, if they do not wish for you to read it. They shall send the letter of recommendation to the secretariat via the e-mail oerstedpostdoc@adm.dtu.dk before deadline.

I have previously applied for the program in an earlier call. Am I allowed to apply again?

Yes. Even though you have previously applied for the program in an earlier call, there is no impediment for you to apply again.

The drop down boxes do not work what should I do?

If the drop down boxes do not work, you can either delete the box or write next to it. Dates should be written: date, month, year. You can find the different DTU departments at: http://www.dtu.dk/english at the red navigation bar at the top of the page.

The text boxes in Annex I do not allow hard returns, subscripts, superscripts, bullet points, graphic elements etc. What should I do?

Delete the text boxes or write below them that should enable you to paste into or write directly in the document like you would in any other Word document.

If I get a fellowship how soon can I start?

The Selection Committee Board will meet and decide upon 22 candidates in June 2018. Based on this we estimate that a fellow can start no earlier than July or August 2018.

What is meant by ‘College Level’?

By ‘College Level’ is meant: high school/upper secondary school/sixth-form college/Gymnasium/lycée/liceo/instituto de segunda enseñanza… ect.

What is ‘Gendered Innovation’?

A topic is considered gender relevant when it, or its findings, affects individuals or groups of persons; i.e. if the subjects or end users are human beings or results can be related to human beings. An in-depth understanding of men and women’s needs, behaviour and attitudes contributes to the scientific quality and societal relevance of the resulting knowledge, technologies and innovations. If gendered innovation is relevant for your research, you should include this in your research plan.

What is 4 years Full-Time Equivalent Research Experience?

Full-Time Equivalent Research Experience is calculated from the date when you obtained the degree (master's degree) which would formally entitle you to embark on a doctorate. Only postgraduate research experience is relevant for this purpose. Other professional activities are not taken into account, no matter when these took place. Research done during your master's degree therefore does not count.
