The Department of Environmental Engineering (DTU Environment) at the Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a position as Postdoc within the Water Resources Engineering section.

The section covers management, protection and remediation of freshwater in natural settings (rivers, lakes) and groundwater in shallow and deep aquifers. We develop new measurement techniques for water resources and hydrological processes, using satellite remote sensing, unmanned airborne vehicle surveys, and near-surface geophysics. Data are used to inform models, forecasting tools and decision support systems.
 
The postdoctoral research focuses on the development of sensing techniques for rivers and streams deployed from unmanned airborne vehicles (UAVs). New data acquisition, data processing and model-data fusion techniques will be developed, supporting a range of new applications in water resources management, flood hazard management and contaminant risk assessment.
 
Responsibilities and tasks
The postdoctoral research will be carried out in collaboration with a number of academic, industrial and public sector partners, including DTU Space, Orbicon and DHI. Activities will be embedded into a larger research project funded by Innovation Fund Denmark.

The specific responsibilities and tasks of the postdoctoral researcher will include

  • Development of new sensing methods for hydraulic and environmental variables
  • Integration of sensors into UAV payload packages
  • Planning and execution of UAV flight campaigns
  • Data processing and interpretation
  • Data-model fusion and integration into decision support systems
  • Project management and coordination of project partners
  • Contribution to teaching and student project supervision at DTU Environment

Qualifications
Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent.

The successful candidate will have expertise in hydrology and hydraulics, practical experience with different types of sensors (radar, sonar, thermal, spectral) and payload integration. Experience with flying lightweight unmanned platforms is a requirement. Willingness to travel and work in an international environment is essential. Documented successful teaching experience is important.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.

The period of employment is 2 years starting from December 1, 2017
