Science summary:

Power supplies that connect to wall plugs of universal mains are commonly used for industrial and consumer electronics, for example household appliances.
These power supplies convert the power from the grid to low voltages to supply the appliances like computers and mobile phones.

Power supplies are everywhere nowadays, but the size, weight, cost, and performance constraints of conventional power supplies limit their further potential applications.

Advances in miniaturization and integration of grid connected power converters have tremendous impact on realizing many emerging applications, such as light-emitting diode (LED) drivers for intelligent lighting systems, and internet of things (IoT), and are the topic of this research project.

Towards the goal of reducing the sizes of power supplies, the research work focuses on the energy conversion from grid to lower voltages, and a systematic development on components, topologies, and electrical circuit architectures has been conducted.
This includes the analysis and design of integrated high voltage power devices on silicon chips, and the design and implementation of capacitor-based and inductor-based converters with a two-stage power converter architecture.

This research highly contributes to the research and development towards the Power Supply on Chip (PwrSoC) and the efficient integrated grid connected power conversion. The technologies are currently in their infancy but will soon take place in the forthcoming intelligent systems controlled by smartphones or even artificial intelligence (AI).
