The section Wind Turbine Loads and Control (LAC) at DTU Wind Energy is seeking a Postdoc within design optimization of wind turbine support structures with focus on floating platforms and towers for floating wind turbines. The optimization includes the effects of dynamic response to waves and rotor loads. The section Wind Turbine Loads and Control focuses on modelling and analysis of loads and dynamics, aeroelastic stability, and control of wind turbines and wind farms. The research is implemented in software and in courses to the benefit of the wind energy community in general.

Your work includes development, implementation and application of mathematical models and numerical analysis and optimization methods for performing structural and multidisciplinary optimization within wind energy. The research will focus on the establishment of an optimization framework around a frequency-domain based response model which additionally to wind and wave forcing also includes representation of mooring loads and control of floating platforms. Additionally the work encompasses optimal design of a reference floater and tower using the developed optimization framework.

Responsibilities and tasks
The successful candidate will have a leading role in the development of advanced models and numerical methods for analysis and integrated design optimization of next generation offshore support structures. You will participate in national and international research and innovation projects and contribute to the management and generation of new projects. There are also good opportunities for developing innovative ideas in the direction of commercial products. The research aims at future implementation in the industry and is sometimes performed in collaboration with the industry, as well as other Danish and foreign research institutions.

The position also includes some possibilities for teaching and supervision in structural and multidisciplinary optimization at MSc and PhD levels.

The work in this Postdoc position is carried out in collaboration with the Fluid Mechanics section of the department that provides the load models. The section also collaborates with other groups at DTU Wind Energy and other DTU departments on research in structural and multidisciplinary optimization. The postdoc is encouraged to further develop both internal and external research collaboration and initiate new collaboration with the wind energy industry.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a PhD degree in mechanical engineering, wind energy or equivalent.

The position requires the following technical qualifications:

  • You are a specialist with research experience in structural and/or multidisciplinary analysis and optimization, and preferably with experience from structural optimization of either bottom-fixed or floating offshore support structures. You have experience with optimization of the dynamic performance of structures
  • You are acquainted with offshore wind energy
  • You are experience in modern scientific programming languages (e.g. Matlab, Fortran, Python, C/C++, etc.)
  • You have experience in finite element modelling, implementation and computations for structural analysis
  • You are fluent in communicating, reading and writing English
  • You are able to work both independently and in teams towards research goals.
The successful candidate has the following personal competences
  • You are motivated by both personal and team accomplishments.
  • You thrive on collaboration and teamwork.
  • You have a focus on processes and development as much as on results.
