The section Air, Land and Water Resources is dedicated to study the interaction between the atmosphere, the natural environment and the anthroposphere. The focus is on direct and indirect effects on functioning and stability of terrestrial ecosystems, on biosphere-atmosphere exchange of greenhouse gases and reactive gases and particles, and on the effects of toxic components of the atmosphere on plant growth and human health. The research includes important feedbacks between the terrestrial biosphere and the global climate.

The focus of the position is the quantification of fugitive gaseous emissions. DTU Environment has secured a strong position in this field, and the candidate will contribute to strengthen this position in cooperation with other researchers at DTU as well as at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden. The research goal is to develop and apply innovative remote sensing measuring methods based on optical remote sensing solar occultation flux, vertical wind and concentration profiling and tracer gas release for source flux quantification of greenhouse gases and ammonia from industrial and agricultural facilities. The research will primarily include field tests and measuring activities.

Responsibilities and tasks
You will engage in research directly relevant to the measurements of greenhouse gas emissions. The research will be done within an inspiring international work environment with colleagues with strong experience on the topic, you will be working on. Advanced state of the art laboratory and field research equipment and facilities will be available to reach your research aims. These tools include analytical instruments (FTIR, CRDS, SOF, LIDAR), unmanned aerial vehicles, etc.

  • You will obtain valuable experience in the most effective state-of-the-art quantification methods of fugitive greenhouse gas emissions
  • You will contribute to the highly important effort to report and reduce greenhouse gas emissions
  • The results of your work will be of immediate interest to Danish authorities

You should be a highly motivated student, who is interested in doing cutting-edge research and is interested in fieldwork. Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge and experience within the following areas:

  •  Quantification and modelling of fugitive gaseous emissions
  • Atmospheric chemistry, air monitoring and modelling
  • Analytical instrumentations such as FTIR, SOF, LIDAR, etc.
  • Unmanned aerial vehicles navigation, measurements and observation systems
  • Environmental assessment of waste management and agricultural systems

A driver’s license is required for this position.

Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.

A significant part of the time (~12-14 months) will be spend at Department of Space, Earth and Environment, Microwave and Optical Remote Sensing, Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden.
