1-year research assistant position, Geomagnetism Group, DTU Space, Denmark.

Focus on aerodynamic optimization of a newly developed VTOL hybrid fixed-wing UAV and UAV-towed magnetometer bird solutions.

Part of MuVerDrone (2018-2021) project funded by EIT-RM (European Institute of Technology & Innovation – Raw Materials).

Collaboration with Danish drone-developer Sky-Watch A/S.

The Geomagnetism Department at DTU Space (Denmark) currently leads two major UAV projects (MuVerDrone: 2018-2021 and UAV-QMS: 2017-2021) with the purposes of developing UAVs for UXO detection, archaeology, mineral exploration and geoscience research.

You can read about the projects at http://www.space.dtu.dk/english/research/research_divisions/geomagnetism/projects

We focus on integrating magnetic sensors on multirotor UAVs and VTOL hybrid fixed-wing UAVs. We test the systems in the field and use the data for real-life applications and fundamental research.

Our main focus is magnetic sensor systems for which we design and test towed magnetometer bird solutions as well as wing-tip installations.

Responsibilities and tasks
You will be responsible for the aerodynamic optimization of

  • a customized wing-tip magnetometer solution on a newly developed VTOL hybrid fixed-wing UAV.
  • newly developed towed magnetometer bird solutions for multirotor UAVs.
If time allows, we want you to look into an overall aerodynamic optimization of the VTOL hybrid fixed-wing UAV.

You are expected to collaborate closely with people on the project, including an aerospace mechanical engineer as well as PhDs/postdocs in geophysics in order to obtain not only an optimal aerodynamic design but also an optimal design seen from a magnetic data acquisition point of view.

Qualifications
Candidates must hold a master’s degree in engineering or similar focusing on aerodynamics.

Experience with one or more of the following fields is an advantage:

- Aerodynamic design, optimization and test of lightweight fixed-wing-type UAVs
- Computational Fluid Dynamic
- Aerodynamic design, optimization and test of hybrid VTOL and fixed-wing UAVs
- Production and material selection of small lightweight UAVs especially carbon fiber
- Wind tunnel setup and tests

DTU Space is the national leader in magnetic measurements and UAV-based magnetic surveying. We offer an interesting workplace in an international environment.

The Geomagnetism Department currently holds 16-18 full-time employees (PhD students, postdocs, research assistants, scientists, engineers, administrative personnel) as well as 5-6 M.Sc. students. We specialize in all aspects of the Earth’s magnetic field.

Our group is very social and informal and we organize frequent group dinners. The “drone group” is a new and growing segment within the Geomagnetism Department. The group is led by Senior Scientist Arne Døssing. Besides A. Døssing the drone group currently consists of 1 PhD student (geophysics), 1 research assistant (geophysics), 1 research assistant (aerospace engineering), 1 upcoming postdoc (geophysics), 1 geomagnetic engineer, and 1 external consultant in aerospace-engineering.
