A researcher position is available in the Microbial Biotechnology and Biorefining Group at the National Food Institute, DTU (Lyngby).

The focus of this position is on improving the flavor forming capacity of selected dairy relevant lactic acid bacteria (LAB). The researcher will isolate mutants with desirable properties using classical mutagenesis in combination with a high-throughput microfluidic-based screening system. Isolated mutants will be characterized in different ways, e.g. by growth experiments and by analyzing products formed. Of other tasks that can be mentioned are genome sequences analysis and genetic engineering. The researcher will also be involved in supervising a PhD student employed on the same project.

The Microbial Biotechnology and Biorefining Group has a strong background in working with LAB and deep insight into LAB physiology and genetics. In the last few years we have developed several efficient LAB based cell-factories, one of which will be further developed in the current project.  

The position as a researcher is a permanent entry-level position.

Responsibilities and tasks
The researcher will be employed on a project funded by the Innovation Fund Denmark and the Danish Dairy Research Foundation (MFF), and which is a collaboration between DTU Food, ARLA Foods and ARLA Foods Ingredients.

The researcher will be involved in preparing timely reports to the steering committee. Other tasks will include preparing manuscripts for publication, presenting data at conferences, and travelling to annual consortium meetings.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent, have documented experience with metabolic engineering and fermentation of prokaryotes with an aim to optimize production efficiency/capacity for compounds of industrial interest.   

Candidates with a strong background within LAB physiology/genetics are preferred. Fermentation experience is also seen as important. Since the project is highly interdisciplinary, the successful candidates must be prepared to learn and adapt several new methodologies. Candidates with a strong publication record are preferred.
 
It is important to have a good English proficiency, and it is essential that the candidates are able to work in a team and collaborate with national and international partners.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The position as a researcher is a permanent entry-level position. After a maximum of 4 years, a researcher can be promoted to a senior researcher position after assessment.
