One 3-year PhD scholarship in antibody discovery is available starting March 1st 2019 or shortly thereafter. The project will be supervised by Associate Professor Andreas H. Laustsen. The successful candidate will join a young and ambitious, international research team, which is a part of the Protein Science & Biotherapeutics section at DTU Bioengineering.

Research in the Tropical Pharmacology Lab is focused on the use of phage display technology for antibody discovery, as well as toxinology and biotherapeutics. This includes design and development of novel antivenoms against animal envenomings.

Responsibilities and tasks
The PhD projects will explore different ways of employing phage display technology for the discovery of antibodies with special binding properties against snake toxins. For more information, please contact Andreas H. Laustsen.

Qualifications
The successful candidate must have a Master’s degree within biotechnology and must have at least 12 months of practical lab experience specifically within discovery of human therapeutic antibodies using phage display technology. The candidate must have a clear understanding of snake venom toxinology with both practical research experience in this field, as well as a proven track record for publishing scientific articles in leading toxinology journals.

Candidates that do not fulfill these strict requirements are not eligible and will thus not be selected.

Preferably, the candidate has performed phage display experiments in laboratories in different countries and has experience working with multiple antibody formats, including scFvs, VHHs, Fabs, and IgGs. The successful candidate should thrive in a highly ambitious research group that aims to establish new research fields. The successful candidate should be highly motivated, eager to seek and share knowledge, able to work independently in a dynamic group environment, and should be confident in planning and carrying out complicated tasks. Good communication skills in both written and spoken English are expected.

The ideal candidate must have a strong background in antibody technology, including:

  • Experience with phage display panning techniques.
  • Experience with preparation of antigens for phage display selection (RP-HPLC, biotinylation, MALDI-TOF)
  • Experience with analysis of antibodies (sequencing, SPR, ELISA, electrophoresis)
  • Experience with handling of biological reagents, including venom proteins.Experience with molecular cloning techniques in E. coli.

Approval and Enrolment

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide.
