Research Technician in Electron Microscopy for Soft Matter (Biological Matter)

We are looking for a skilled and experienced research technician who will prepare biological samples for TEM and SEM imaging as well as acquire and analyze images.

The job
DTU Danchip/Cen, National Center for Electron Nanoscopy and Micro/Nanofabrication invites applications for a permanent research technician position within the research group of Soft Matter led by associate professor Mériem Er-Rafik.

DTU Danchip/Cen is a central research infrastructure at the Technical University of Denmark with the overall mission of contributing to research, development, innovation and education within the following scientific areas: Development and application of advanced characterization methods by means of electron microscopy and development and application of advanced micro- and nanofabrication technology.

The technician will be affiliated to the Center for Electron Nanoscopy (DTU Cen) currently employing 18 scientists and 5 technical staff members.

Primary areas of responsibility
Electron microscopy sample preparation/General lab duties - Prepare samples for TEM and SEM imaging and take and analyze images. 

  • Prepare and assist with basic electron microscopy sample preparation.
  • Perform Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) imaging and perform Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) imaging as required.
  • Perform the preparation of soft matter and biological specimens using cryogenic techniques such as slam freezing, high pressure freezing and freeze fracture
  • Perform sample preparation for electron microscopy including cell fixation, resin embedding, thin sectioning, and staining
  • Cut samples in thin section by (cryo)-ultramicrotomy
  • Prepare and operate electron microscope for cryo-specimens
  • Operate and maintain preparation equipment
  • Prepare reagents and re-stock lab with supplies
  • Conduct assays and lab procedures as outlined in testing record and regulatory guidelines.
  • Maintain lab supplies and help with general lab maintenance this includes maintaining lab stock, managing chemical inventory and providing general lab operations support, as needed
  • Help orient and train new staff, users or students.
  • Work under close supervision from the responsible of soft matter microscopy.

Required Qualifications  
The successful applicant should hold a Bachelor’s degree with major in Biological Sciences or have obtained qualifications equivalent to those by working experience.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on either the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC), OAO-collective agreement made between the Danish Ministry of Finance and HK/Stat or other relevant agreement.
