We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to join the project ‘InstaPatch – instantaneous monitoring of allergic reactions’, which is funded by a grant from the Danish Independent Research Council.

Allergy is one of the world’s most common chronic conditions and caused by immunoreaction of the human body towards in principle harmless allergens. An increasing number of people is diagnosed as allergic towards insect stings, pollen, dust, animal dander, food or drugs. The state of the art method for allergy screening and monitoring is the skin prick test (SPT) where different allergens are introduced into the skin of the tested person. The evaluation of the SPT requires an experienced health care professional assessing visible changes of the skin due to local inflammation. This method is non quantitative, a relative low number of tests can be performed and patients might experience unpleasant reactions.

In the InstaPatch project we will develop a novel allergy test providing instantaneous and quantitative monitoring of allergic reactions in the skin. The project is based on close collaboration between DTU Nanotech, the Allergy Clinic at Gentofte Hospital, DTU Food, Cardiff University and Malmö University.

We are based at DTU Nanotech, where we conduct interdisciplinary research and where micro- and nanotechnology is applied to a wide range of scientific disciplines and applications. The Biomaterial Microsystems group is a highly ambitious group, pursuing research on microfabrication of 3D polymer and carbon structures and devices and their application in drug delivery, bioelectrochemistry and biosensing.

Responsibilities and tasks
Your main contribution will be the development of the actual sensor platform in the cleanroom of DTU Danchip. For this purpose, novel methods for fabrication of microsensors based on pyrolytic carbon have to be implemented. These novel materials and sensor systems will be used by other members of the project team for the monitoring of allergic reactions. Furthermore, you will design and fabricate a prototype of the InstaPatch to be used for in vivo experiments and clinical trials.

We expect that you: 

  • embrace the responsibility to plan and execute experimental research
  • are interested in material science, polymer engineering and microfabrication and are eager to explore new research areas
  • have extensive experience with carbon materials and pyrolysis
  • have successfully designed and fabricated microsensors in a cleanroom such as the one at DTU Danchip
  • have excellent engineering skills and an analytical mindset
  • are motivated to contribute to technology enabling in vivo diagnostics
  • like teamwork and have the ability to interact and collaborate with researchers and laboratory technicians in a very cross-disciplinary environment

Qualifications
Candidates should have a PhD degree in engineering or a related field.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 2 years.

Workplace
The microfabrication will be carried out at DTU Lyngby Campus at DTU Nanotech and DTU Danchip, providing the infrastructure necessary to conduct the research in this ambitious project.
