The Department of Environmental Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU Environment) advertises a fully funded 3-year PhD position in “Electrokinetic techniques in subsurface applications”. The research will be performed within the Section Environmental Fate & Effect of Chemicals and links well to other projects currently ongoing at DTU Environment.

The project focuses on the investigation of the potential of electrokinetic (EK) techniques for solute distribution and mobilization in different applications encompassing groundwater remediation and in-situ leaching and recovery of metals and metalloids.

The main objectives of the project are to:
  • Advance the scientific understanding of charge transport in porous media
  • Propose and test new concepts for electrokinetic remediation
  • Develop and test modelling tools for EK applications
  • Design, optimize, and perform model-based interpretation of EK experiments at laboratory and field scales
The project will be mainly based on numerical modelling, but will also entail some experimental work.

Responsibilities and tasks and qualifications
The successful candidate will have a background in environmental engineering and will have an interest in numerical modelling of subsurface processes. Previous modelling experience and/or work on electrokinetic techniques are an advantage.

The successful candidate will:
  • Develop innovative modelling approaches for EK simulations
  • Use the developed models to evaluate the distribution of charged reactants and the mobilization of charged contaminants
  • Study the mechanisms of transport of charged species in porous media
  • Perform experimental investigation of EK-enhanced transport
  • Perform model-based interpretation of EK datasets observed at both pilot and field-scale applications

The candidate will have excellent skills in English (oral and written) and will work in a team consisting of scientists from DTU Environment, as well as international partners in the project (University of Western Australia). The candidate will visit for an extensive research stay the partner institution during the period of the PhD project.

Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.

Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
