DTU, Department of Mechanical Engineering, the section for Manufacturing Engineering has a vacant 3-year postdoc position in the recently granted project “Optimized high performance ductile cast iron using 4D X-ray analysis and microstructural modelling”.

The position is to be filled 1 October 2018 or soon after that.

The project, supported by the Danish Council for Independent Research, aims at providing the basis for optimizing the properties of ductile cast iron in order to meet the future demand for lighter and more reliable components in sectors like automotive and wind-energy.

Responsibilities and tasks
The candidate is expected to work in close collaboration with international partners in the UK and in France. The overall task is to use the latest 4D (3D+time) synchrotron X-ray imaging and diffraction methods in combination with electron microscopy to visualize and quantify the development of ductile iron microstructure during solidification and subsequent solid-state cooling. The final goal is to establish the theoretical basis, in the form of quantitative models, for understanding the mechanisms controlling the occurrence of defects like degenerate graphite and porosity.    

Qualifications
The successful applicant is required to hold a PhD degree or equivalent in materials science or in manufacturing/mechanical engineering. Furthermore, he/she must demonstrate a strong background within (listed in order of importance): 

  • Quantitative materials image analysis, preferably of X-ray computed tomography data
  • Solidification of metals, preferably cast irons
  • Advanced microscopy characterization techniques, e.g. SEM, EBSD, TEM
  • Programming in Python and/or Matlab
  • Mathematical modelling

Excellent English communication skills are essential.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
