Life styles in our societies are set and defined by our living standards, which are being fulfilled by specific consumption patterns. If we expect to continue growing globally, without irreversibly affecting our environment, new sustainable technologies and processes must be developed. The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (CFB) was founded on the vision “to lead the transformation of chemical production from a petrochemical industry to a more sustainable bio-based industry”. In order to fulfil this expectation, the CFB is developing technologies which aims to rapidly construct microbial cell factories (MFC) to produce a range of chemical products

The project
The computational chemistry group, at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability aims to provide metabolic engineers a comprehensive set of computer aided designs and the corresponding analysis, for accelerating the microbial cell factory development process. By integrating state of the art systems biology and chemoinformatic computational tools and methods, our goal is to elucidate the theoretical capabilities of a cell to become a microbial cell factory for bio-manufacture any chemical compound of interest. The biological designs include a rank order set of biological pathways with the corresponding genome-protein-associations, together with a heterologous pathway host’s insertion risks analysis, and eventually a structured plasmid design to express the necessary genes in the predefined host.
The job
We are looking for a software developer with a strong focus on scientific tools implementations and integration. You will be dealing with biological and chemical concepts every day, and figuring it out efficient ways to operate with genes and biochemical reactions. Deep understanding of biology and chemistry is not a requirement, nevertheless we expect you to engage and embrace concepts related to sustainability, microbial cell factories and metabolic engineering,

As a software developer, you will be contributing to the next generation metabolic modeling software. Your responsibilities will relate mostly to the backend side. Your main tasks would include:

  • Developing new features and interfaces while maintaining clean and coherent codebase
  • Collaborating with the project partners outside of the team if needed
  • Participating in regular meetings where the team members altogether discuss the progress and the next steps
Our expectations of you

The competences that will be required:

  • A degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Data Science or a related field, or equivalent work experience
  • Git version control

Would be a plus to have experience with:

  • Working with graph databases (neo4j)
  • Chemoinformatics packages (rdkit, chemaxon)
  • Systems Biology packages (cameo, cobrapy)
  • DevOps
  • Scientific Python stack (numpy, scipy, pandas etc)
  • Docker and orchestration tools (Kubernetes etc)
  • Agile development (Scrum etc)

You are also expected to be able to work in a highly collaborative environment, inside the team as well as with the other project partners. Thus, fluent written and spoken English is essential.

Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.


The position is limited until February 28, 2020. The working place will be at DTU Lyngby Campus.
