In autumn 2012 Technical University of Denmark launches a new MSc program, which combines scientific expertise with crossdisciplinary technological competencies in subjects such as instrumentation, modeling and data processing, with focus on developing, designing and applying technological solutions.
We are currently heavily dependent on technological solutions, where physical parameters are monitored, mapped or explored. Although it might not be felt directly in everyday life, technologies for monitoring and mapping of earth and space exploration play a prominent role in our daily lives. Without these technologies we wouldn’t have e.g. GPS navigation in cars, reliable weather forecasts, global climate and environment monitoring or global telecommunications. These services and systems must be further developed in the future while new challenges will come. It is therefore essential to educate engineers who can combine knowledge of the technological and physical aspects of sustainable and advanced technological solutions.
Contribute to new technological solutions that anticipate the challenges facing society
A graduate from the Earth and Space Physics and Engineering program will greatly contribute to new technological solutions that anticipate the challenges facing society. The climate and environment is in great need for new and innovative methods and services to monitor the condition and changes of the climate and the effect of the climate adaptation methods. The number of new applications and services for navigation and mapping will explode in coming years with the availability of more accurate data from navigation satellites, images from Earth observation satellites, improved communication and increasingly sophisticated user terminals such as smartphones. Exploration for new energy and mineral resources and more efficient use of existing deposits are also an important social task. These are just some examples where the development and application of the optimum technological solutions is essential to society and political attention.
Design, develop and implement
The hallmark of the program is that it combines scientific expertise with crossdisciplinary technological competencies in subjects such as instrumentation, modeling and data processing. The training will focus on developing, designing and applying technological solutions to monitor, identify, model and predict the physical parameters and processes on large scale, i.e. Earth and Space. The technological solutions can, for example, be observational concepts, instruments, and data processing methods. Other solutions may be modeling, systems and services for decision support and monitoring applications in, for example, climate and environmental monitoring, mapping and navigation, resource exploration and space exploration. Overall, the program offers graduates a wide range of employment possibilities both in Denmark and abroad, both in public and private industry.
