This issue of DTU’s international magazine is focusing on light. Light and light technologies play an increasingly important role within the areas of communication, medicine, computers, and entertainment. Technologist no. 6 will take a closer look at how light affects us and our society.

LED technology, for example, is one of the technologies covered in this issue. It opens up new possibilities for controlling and adjusting light intensity and colour, and therefore allows you to create, for example, urban spaces with less vandalism or office premises, where the light intensity is similar to that of daylight and follows the rhythm of nature, thus boosting employee productivity.

Technologist also takes us on a trip to Estonia. A small country in the process of creating a society that optimally exploits the many opportunities offered by digitalization, for example by providing Wi-Fi virtually everywhere. All communication between citizens and public authorities is done quickly and efficiently, all citizens have a digital ID card that, among other things, enables online voting and direct access to your medical journal. You can start and register a new business within a few minutes. Put together, this means that the country has created a stimulating climate for entrepreneurship and, as a result, a large number of tech entrepreneurs—with the video call service Skype being the most prominent example. Skype was founded in 2003 in Estonia by Janus Friis from Denmark, Niklas Zennström from Sweden, and the three Estonian engineers Ahti Heinla, Priit Kasesalu, and Jaan Tallinn.
