On 3 October, Professor Shiping Zhu from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen will give a seminar on “Precision Production of Polymers: A New Age of Polymer Reaction Engineering”

About Prof. Shiping Zhu :

Dr. Zhu received BEng from Zhejiang University China in 1982, and PhD from McMaster University Canada in 1991. He joined McMaster as a faculty member in 1994 and served as Department Chair for Chemical Engineering during 2009-2014. He is currently serving as a Vice President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen.

Dr. Zhu’s research is in the areas of polymer reaction engineering, controlled radical polymerization, catalytic polymerization of olefins, polymerization process modeling, and smart polymer materials. He has published 360 technical papers, which have been cited by others for more than 10,000 times, with an H index over 60. He has trained about 130 postgraduate and postdoctoral fellows.

Dr. Zhu was elected as a Fellow to the Canadian Academy of Engineering in 2010, and to the Royal Society of Canada in 2014. He was bestowed the highest title of Distinguished University Professor at McMaster University in 2015, and received the premier chemical engineering award in Canada, RS Jane Memorial Award, in 2016.

Abstract
Chemical engineering deals with production and processing of materials and chemicals. Polymers are macromolecules that have thousands of small molecules joined together by covalent bonds. Polymer reaction engineering is about industrial production of polymers. Polymers are chain molecules and their materials properties are determined to a large extent by their chain microstructures. Different from small molecules, polymers are the products of not only recipes but also processes. Precision production of polymers having pre-designed chain microstructures represents a new trend in polymer reaction engineering. Presented in this seminar is a big picture and personal viewpoints on the evolution of chemical engineering and the development of advanced materials. Also presented are several research stories that include high-strength polyethylene fibers made by nano-extrusion polymerization; long-chain-branched polyethylenes for the best combination of melt strength and processability; semi-batch reactor technology for controlled gradient copolymers; re-dispersible latexes prepared by CO2-switchable surfactant, as well as preparation of highly sensitive and strong foams that can feel mosquitos and stand for elephants.

Participation is open to all interested people.
