About the Online Wind Energy Master

The part-time master programme is scheduled to take two to four years, making it possible for participants to study while working. The participants come from all over the world and in August, the first participants graduate.

On Friday August 30, 2019, there will be a reception in B118 for the eight graduates.

Abstract: Wind Resource Assessment for Comodoro Rivadavia City, Patagonia, Argentina, using WAsP and the Global Wind Atlas

An extraordinary wind resource is available in Patagonia Argentina where only 750 MW of installed capacity was developed by the end of 2018. Existing records show outstanding capacity factor values higher than 60%. Regulatory framework and incentives were modified during the last years in order to accelerate the development of renewable energy projects in Argentina, but other infrastructure limitations, such as electric grid, are a constrain to transport the produced electricity to the main consumption centers. For example, Buenos Aires city is located 1600 km from Comodoro Rivadavia.

Comodoro Rivadavia is one of the most populated cities in Patagonia. Its main economic activity is oil production which is linked directly to the electricity demand in the area. The possible synergy between wind farms and oil fields here is based on the existing energy demand that is supplied mainly by produced energy in other regions of Argentina, transported by a high-voltage electric line of 500 KV. Additionally, Oil companies have the rights over extended areas due to oil exploitation agreements. This can simplify and accelerate wind projects developments in their areas. In addition, some big oil companies were obligated by the recent regulatory framework to consume at least 8% of its electricity from renewable energy sources by the end of 2017, reinforcing this synergy.

In this project Manantiales Behr (99 MW) and Diadema (27.45 MW) wind farms are modelled in WAsP in order to understand the resources in the area. Manantiales Behr and Diadema wind farms belong to YPF and Capex (oil companies) respectively and are located in the same concession areas where oil is produced. Public information databases, including Global Wind Atlas (GWA), are used to build the WAsP Projects. Roughness sensitivity is performed in order to quantify the impact of this variable. Because of this analysis it was possible to identity that the roughness data imported from GWA database must be modified because roughness lengths are too high compared to the actual surface characteristics. In addition, WAsP’s IBZ and CFD models are run for both wind farms. The orography is very different in both windfarms even though they are located very close to each other. The Annual Energy Production (AEP) results are compared with actual production energy data. The vector maps with the lowest roughness values achieves the best matches. In addition, a new wind farm (extension of Manantiales Behr) is modelled.

With this understanding of the resources it is possible to calculate the installed capacity that must be developed in order to supply the local energy demand from the oilfields. This resulted in 7 additional wind farms like Manantiales Behr which is totally achievable in the area around Comodoro Rivadavia.

This study describes and quantifies a realistic and relevant case of the synergy that can exist between the oil industry and wind energy projects while transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy.
