The Center for Electric Power an Energy at the Department of Electrical Engineering invites applicants for a 3-year PhD position in the area of “Model-based optimal energy operation and management strategies for multi-energy industrial symbiosis with high share of renewables”. The project will build on recent research works and achievements in integrated energy systems and market-based flexibility management at DTU.

A multi-energy industrial symbiosis is a powerful mechanism for creating a circular economy and innovative revenue streams by simply letting stakeholders sited in the same industrial region work together. The objective of this PhD project is to develop multi-objective oriented energy management and operation strategies, to be applied in a live Danish industrial symbiosis example with highly integrated electricity, heat and gas infrastructure and high share of renewables, i.e. GreenLabSkive. The developed strategies shall support decision-makings for short-term scheduling and real-time dispatch of the regional multi-energy system, considering various revenue streams, operational limits of individual plants and energy networks, and temporal features of various information flows e.g. forecasts of energy prices.

Responsibilities and tasks
The proposed PhD study will develop model-based operation and management strategies for a live Danish industrial symbiosis that consists of combined heat and power plant, wind and solar power plants, electrolysis, biogas plant, energy storage units and electricity/heat/gas networks. In addition to developing dynamic models of the involved technologies and energy networks, the PhD project intends to answer the following research questions: 

  • How to model and represent integrated flexibility of integrated multiple energy systems
  • How to stack optimally multiple revenue streams in different energy sectors (heat/electricity/gas) and marketplaces (energy trading, energy balancing and congestion management) in order to achieve maximum economic gains?
  • How operation and dispatch strategies influence sizing and configuration of industrial symbiosis?
  • How can integrated multi-energy operation contribute to energy system resilience, e.g. islanded operation?
Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

The ideal candidate has experience with energy system modeling (electricity/heat/gas), optimization, electricity markets, and with an interest in programming.
Preference will be given to candidates with: 
  • A relevant background in electrical engineering, energy systems, applied mathematics
  • Knowledge of energy network operation and management, energy markets, optimal dispatch and operation of energy systems
  • Good Software design and programming skills e.g., Python, Matlab, GAMS
  • Independent problem solving skills
  • Excellent communication and language skills
Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
