A 3-year postdoctoral position is available at the Department of Biotechnology and Bioengineering (DTU-Bioengineering) in the project “New Enzyme- and Protein-based Wastewater Treatment for Contaminant Degradation and Resource Recovery” (NEPWAT)– The project will be carried out at the Protein Glycoscience and Biotechnology Group within the Protein Chemistry and Enzyme Technology section that harbours about 70 staff members. This project is a collaboration with DTU Environment, University of Copenhagen and an international partner.

The postdoc will be responsible for the discovery and evaluation of oxidoreductases and other enzyme classes that are able to degrade or detoxify organic contaminants from wastewater.

 

Responsibilities and tasks

The postdoc will be responsible for the identification and/or discovery of enzymes that catalyse the transformation of a library of representative recalcitrant wastewater contaminants and for the evaluation of these enzymes as remediation tools. Specific tasks include:

  • Based on the chemistry of representative contaminant groups, make a rational selection of enzymes for activity screening
  • Discovery of novel fungal or bacterial enzyme candidates active on selected contaminants using different “omics” tools, e.g. informatics, metabolomics, proteomics using the technology platforms at the DTU-Bioengineering.
  • Cloning and production of target candidate enzymes in yeast (P. pastoris) expression systems for evaluation of their activity
  • Selecting and setting up appropriate analytical tools and activity assays for qualitative and quantitative analysis of the enzymatic pollutant conversion. 

Qualifications
The successful candidate is a highly talented, self-driven and motivated scientist with a documented track record of excellence and a PhD degree in Protein Chemistry, Protein Engineering/design, Chemistry or relevant related disciplines.

  • A solid background in chemistry and/or experience in oxidoreductases are highly desirable.
  • Experience in recombinant protein production in yeast or bacteria, enzymology, protein engineering/design are clear assets for the position.

Salary and terms of employment

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

 

The position is for three years, will be available from 1rst of April (although there is a degree of flexibility for the starting point)
