The Department of Management at the Technical University of Denmark in Greater Copenhagen invites applications for a 3-year PhD position in the area of interorganizational collaboration related to advanced technologies, starting April 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter in 2022. The position is part of a joint alliance research project between Technical University of Munich (TUM) and Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The PhD student will be part of DTU Management department in collaboration with DTU Physics. The position is affiliated to the Implementation and Performance Management (IPM) section that aims to advance knowledge on the role of advanced technologies in management and (inter)organizational practice.

How to engage in joint research for collective benefit in deep science networks such as the European Spallation Source (ESS), one of the largest public research investments by Denmark? This research project, together with DTU Management and DTU Physics, focuses on the factors that aid collaboration in industry-academia research networks for scientific discovery but also for business benefit, as the networks around ESS cultivate collaboration between companies.

The research aims at (1) innovating and generalizing interorganizational (private and public) collaboration in deep science; and (2) establishing collaborative solutions for collective benefit; (3) developing additional collaborative practices. Research results are envisioned with prescriptive suggestions how to develop industry-academia network collaboration including best practices and their innovation (so called next practices) – critical to many of society’s current challenges and to deep science such as spallation in physics.

The PhD project conducted at DTU will investigate the interorganization collaboration related to ESS and share results with the network members and stakeholders.

Responsibilities and qualifications
The PhD project answers to scholarly calls of further research into interorganizational collaboration from the perspective of time and temporality supporting collaborative repertoires.


The PhD project investigates questions such as:

  • How do deep science networks use time to enable or prevent the emergence of discovery-driven collaboration?
  • What novel or innovative temporal repertoires are supportive of the collaboration if any?
  • How and when does temporal complexity deter or derail collaboration and its collective benefits?

The outcome of the PhD project will result in research-based recommendations for deep science collaboration for discovery. There are important societal contributions through such enhanced collaborative capability including the increased sustainability of materials that can be established through the ESS and DTU instruments (3D Imaging) for example.

As a PhD student, you will: 

  • Be responsible for conducting your own research project in collaboration with the supervisor and department faculty
  • Have the opportunity to teach and supervise engineering students at DTU
  • Contribute to new knowledge about deep science networks and discovery-driven research
  • Strive to publish your work worldwide in recognised journals
  • Work in close collaboration with researchers from DTU and TUM
  • Present your work at international conferences and seminars
  • Discuss exciting research with colleagues at weekly research meetings

This PhD project will be supervised by Professor Liisa Välikangas at DTU Management and Prof. Henning Friis Poulsen at DTU Physics. The project includes an extended research exchange stay at Technical University of Munich, Germany.

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
