Pathways for fossil-free liquid fuels

Around the world, solutions are being developed that will allow us to exploit aircraft, lorries, and ships in a fossil-free future as all modes of transport that cannot be electrified need green liquid fuels.

Last year, Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg crossed the Atlantic in a sailboat, as she was due to speak at the UN General Assembly in New York. Her choice of transport was a symbolic act highlighting the fact that air traffic like other heavy modes of transport such as lorries and large vessels are a major consumer of fossil fuels. Heavy transport has thus accounted for a large share of global carbon emissions and the derived climate impacts.
