The Department of Wind Energy in the Technical University of Denmark (DTU Wind Energy) is seeking a postdoc for the Section of Fluid Mechanics.

We have a strong research track record within floating wind power. The present position is linked with a new H2020 project, COREWIND, with a focus on mooring dynamics for floating wind turbines at the farm level.

Floating wind power is in rapid development, with several demonstration projects being built presently. The floaters play a major role for the cost and feasibility. They must provide sufficient support for the turbine under operation, and also allow easy installation and assembly.

The present project focuses on detailed hydrodynamic modelling of floaters for 15MW class wind turbines. The basic dynamics for the full system can be described to good approximation with a linear model, based on radiation diffraction theory or the Morison equation driven with 1
st or 2nd-order wave kinematics. Detailed hydrodynamic analysis can next be carried out with hydrodynamic CFD. This setup will be used to model installation loads of such floaters, where the floater is not yet fully ballasted. Extreme wave analysis will also be conducted in this setup.

The position is part of the H2020 COREWIND project. Model scale experiments will be conducted by IH Cantabria. Analysis and re-modelling of the test results will be carried out as part of the post doc research.

Responsibilities and tasks
The postdoc position involves both numerical model development, model application and validation against experimental measurements from the COREWIND project. The tasks include: 

  • Modelling of a 15 MW floating wind turbine in DTUs HAWC2 aero-elastic model
  • Establishment of a linearized simplified model
  • Establishment of a hydrodynamic CFD model in OpenFOAM
  • Simulation study of installation with identification of critical load effects
  • Simulation studies of extreme wave loads
  • Analysis of experimental data and comparison to the numerical model output 
Further, the candidate will contribute to teaching and supervision of MSc and PhD students.

Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent. The successful candidate is required to have: 
  • Documented knowledge of Hydrodynamics and Offshore engineering
  • Documented knowledge on wave hydrodynamics and nonlinear wave theory
  • Experience with hydrodynamic CFD modelling
  • A well developed physical understanding
  • Documented programming skills
  • Ability to work in a project team and take responsibility for own research goals
  • Fluency in communicating and reporting in English
Experience with application of aero-elastic models and knowledge of offshore wind turbines will be considered an advantage.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The position has a duration of 2.5 years.
