DTU Space (the National Space Institute at the Technical University of Denmark) is offering a post-doc position in the area of transient astrophysics. The successful applicant will join a newly established group led by Dr. Giorgos Leloudas focusing on the study of transient phenomena in the Universe. We study all kinds of astrophysical transients with a particular interest on exotic phenomena, such as superluminous supernovae, the zoo of nuclear transients including tidal disruption events, and the newly discovered electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational waves. We are part of and play an active role in various international collaborations and transient surveys, including ePESSTO+, ENGRAVE and BlackGEM. In addition, we have access to and obtain data from the ESO facilities and the Nordic Optical Telescope.


We are seeking a talented and highly motivated post-doc to work at the cutting edge of this rapidly moving research field. You will pursue research on the different aspects of stellar death, participate in target of opportunity observations of transients events, and analyze exciting datasets from world-class facilities. You will have the chance to actively engage in international collaborations and you will be encouraged to lead observing proposals and contribute to the supervision of students. A part of your time will be devoted to activities and science related to the BlackGEM survey.


Candidates should have a PhD degree in Physics or Astrophysics (or related field) by the date of appointment. Applicants with strong programming skills and previous experience in one of the following areas are especially encouraged to apply: supernovae, tidal disruption events, gravitational waves, host galaxy studies, optical/IR spectroscopy, polarimetry, transient surveys and analysis of large datasets. Flexibility and self-motivation are desired skills at DTU Space, as well as a natural interest in collaboration and personal responsibility.

Salary and terms of employment

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union (the basis salary is around 40kDKK, including pension).


The period of employment is 3 years. The starting date is flexible between March and September 2020. Funding for travel and IT is included.
