A 3-year Ph.D. position is available in the Fiber Sensors & Supercontinuum Group at DTU Fotonik, Department of Photonics Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark. Our group is seeking a highly motivated and talented PhD candidate willing to work on a challenging scientific project in a serious but also friendly and team-work oriented environment in the field of optical materials, design and fiber fabrication of novel multi-functional fibers. 

Project description
The PhD position is part of the project entitled: “Multi-BRAIN: Multi-functional optical fibers for brain dynamics monitoring and imaging” and it aims to investigate novel multifunctional fiber-based neural devices based on advanced functional materials. The position involves design of optical fibers using numerical tools, investigation of novel optical materials suitable for optical fibers and finally fabrication of multimaterial optical fibers using our state-of-the-art Fiber Drawing facilities.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree in Physics, Materials Science or Engineering. They should also have: 

  • A track record within the areas of fiber modeling using COMSOL and Matlab,
  • Experience with optical materials and experimental fiber-optics.
  • An excellent academic performance record from a good scientific institution

At the time of recruitment by the host organization, candidates must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers, and have not been awarded a doctoral degree.

Researchers can be of any nationality. They are required to undertake transnational mobility (i.e. move from one country to another) when taking up their appointment. Nationality is therefore not a criterion. Rather the location of the researcher's residence or main activity during the 3 years prior to their recruitment is determining. At the time of recruitment by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the reference date. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programs of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
