The position will be embedded within the Section for Magnetic Resonance at the DTU Health Tech. We conduct research and education within the field of Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy and its applications. Our main focus areas are hyperpolarization, neurophysics, and MRI/MRS methodology.

The main research field of the position will be the advancement of non-invasive transcranial brain stimulation methods as a means to modulate and shape brain activity in healthy subjects and disease populations. Research on novel physical and neurophysical models for brain stimulation will be a major component for reaching this goal. This should be complemented by strong research on novel MRI methods and neuroimaging approaches, with the aim of better characterizing the impact of neurostimulation on brain activity. Research and teaching should be conducted in collaboration with universities, hospitals (in particular the Danish Research Center for Magnetic Resonance at Hvidovre Hospital), and healthcare companies—both nationally and internationally. The competences in neurophysics should be further leveraged to foster related research activities at DTU. 

Responsibilities and tasks 
he main area of responsibility will be to advance research in neurophysics and neuroimaging. More specifically, the position will involve establishment of a research group on neurophysical models of brain stimulation. The basic mechanisms of non-invasive brain stimulation are only poorly understood, rendering a systematic further development of its therapeutic potential very challenging. Theoretical and computational models are important tools to improve the understanding of the basics of non-invasive brain stimulation, but require further advancement and validation to reach their full potential and ensure their clinical relevance. The field of the position will be to further advance models of the stimulation-induced current flow and their application in clinical research, as well as exploring extensions towards multi-scale models and emerging simulation methods such as ultrasound stimulation. Developing and applying methods for physiological and physical validation measurements will be an important aspect of the research. MRI-based methods should be at the core of this research topic to foster synergistic interactions with the other research themes at the Center for Magnetic Resonance.

The position requires developing the research portfolio and funding to develop a research group within the above area. Idea generation, fund raising, research impact and innovation are key performance indicators for the position. Dissemination to the public and exchange of knowledge with society, including participation in the public debate is important. Guidance and supervision of postdocs and PhD students is expected. 

The position requires taking part in teaching within the education of Medicine and Technology within the subjects of magnetic resonance, neurophysics and neuroimaging. 

The successful candidate is expected to take a lead role in teaching at the BSc, MSc, and PhD levels. For international candidates, DTU can provide Danish language courses enabling the candidates to teach in Danish within 2-3 years. 

The preferred candidate has experience at the highest international level within the research field. In particular, the candidate has demonstrated that he/she can successfully bridge engineering and human neuroscience to foster human brain stimulation. The candidate has shown the capability to transform this research field by establishing innovative engineering solutions in neuroscience and clinical research on brain stimulation.

The applicant should meet the following criteria for appointment: 

  • A high level of original scientific production at international level which has contributed to further development of the subject areas in question
  • Documented experience in research proposal development and research leadership
  • Documented experience in establishing and maintaining successful collaborations with relevant clinical partners in Denmark and abroad
  • Documented experience with innovation
  • Documented and successful teaching, including development and planning of courses and experience in project supervision at all levels

Salary and terms of employment 
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The appointment will be part time (18.5 hours per. week)
