Division of Materials and Components at Department of Wind Energy, Technical University of Denmark is seeking candidates for a Senior Researcher position within manufacturing of fibre composites. The position will be anchored in Section of Composites Manufacturing and Testing. This section, together with the other sections in the division, comprises state-of-the-art experimental facilities and competences covering the whole chain of manufacturing, characterization, mechanical testing and modelling of fibre composites.

The research field of manufacturing of composites is currently getting an increased interest from the wind energy sector in relation to lowering cost, improving mechanical performance, enhancing durability, and finding viable end-of-life solutions for the wind turbine blades. The Division of Materials and Components is involved in a number of large projects, such as MadeBlades, Duraledge and Decomblades, where manufacturing related solutions are developed in close contact with the central players from the wind energy industry. It is foreseen that advances in manufacturing of composites is key to meet the requirements for next generation wind turbine blades. 

Responsibilities and qualifications
Do you have a strong research background within manufacturing of fibre composites then perhaps you are our new Senior Researcher. The research of the position covers the manufacturing process and the resulting mechanical properties of fibre composites, specifically taking into account polymer chemistry and physics. Central polymer related phenomena to be studied in relation to the manufacturing process are cure kinetics, residual stresses, flow and permeability. Work will cover both experimental studies in the labs and modelling. Focus will be on a materials level in order to get an understanding of the underlying mechanisms present in the manufacturing process. This is a required first step for improving manufacturing of complex components like wind turbine blades. Teaching and supervision of students within the research field will be developed together with colleagues. Work will be performed in close contact to industry, both as part of external funded projects, and as part of our commissioned work.

  • You will be part of a team of about 20 employees, consisting of researchers, development engineers, PhD students and technicians working closely together.
  • You will contribute to strengthening and further developing the research field of manufacturing of composites at DTU Wind Energy.
  • You will consolidate and further expand our industrial network within the field of composite manufacturing technology.
  • You will be successful in attracting external funding to support research, and its implementation in technical solutions.
  • You will thrive through publication of your scientific work in international journals.
  • You will engage in the development of teaching, and supervision of students.
  • You will contribute to dissemination of research results, internally and externally.

To be a successful candidate for the position, you must meet the following qualifications:

  • You hold a PhD degree (or equivalent), as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding a position as a researcher or postdoc.
  • You have experience in experimental and modelling work of manufacturing and mechanical properties of composites with long/continuous fibres and thermosetting matrix. Industrial experience is valued.
  • You have a strong research background in the field of manufacturing of fibre composites covering aspects of polymer chemistry and physics.
  • You have experience in teaching and supervision.
  • You have a successful record for attracting funding.
  • You enjoy working with complex topics and are driven by pushing boundaries.
  • You are a team player; you are motivated by both individual and team accomplishments.
  • You believe in dialogue and feedback as the best foundation for sound decision-making
  • You strive to develop talent amongst others.

You must contribute to teaching at the Department. You will be expected to learn Danish and be able to teach in Danish after 3 years. DTU can provide Danish language courses.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The salary for the position will be determined by the applicants qualifications and in agreement with the relevant union.
