The Department of Biotechnology and Biomedicine at the Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a position as assistant professor in protein chemistry and engineering. The position is within DTU’s strategy on protein science and biotechnology and specifically targets structure, function, engineering and design involving protein molecular interactions. The assistant professorship is placed in the section on Protein Chemistry and Enzyme Technology at DTU Bioengineering and is a permanent entry-level faculty position.

In the Protein Chemistry and Enzyme Technology section we perform impactful and innovative research aiming at harnessing the biotechnological potential of proteins in food and biomaterials, enzymatic biomass-processing, and interplay of diet, host and gut microbiota. We employ tools within protein structure, function, engineering and molecular interactions analyses as well as proteomics, genomics and bioinformatics. The section teaches bachelor and master students in biotechnology, biochemistry, molecular biology and protein and enzyme chemistry. The section has extensive
international and national collaborations with top academic institutions as well as industrial partners.

Responsibilities and tasks
The successful candidate is expected to contribute forefront research and innovation within protein and enzyme specificity, catalysis and molecular interactions. The impact of protein modularity to function is inherent to the activities in this position. The position is expected to generate fundamental insight relevant to biotechnology, e.g. for protein design and engineering of functional and physico-chemical properties by integrating computational and experimental techniques. Applying approaches relying on biophysical techniques coupled with structural biology to interrogate and manipulate industrially-relevant protein and enzyme functionalities is within the scope of this position. Altogether, the aim is to generate improved fundamental knowledge and directly applicable insight as well as harnessing the growing sequence diversity, tapping into genomes and proteomes and translating it into biotechnology-centric catalysis and protein-protein interactions.

The assistant professorship includes responsibilities in collaboration with industry related to the department’s externally financed projects on proteins and enzymes in foods and on structure/function relationships of carbohydrate active enzymes.

A particular task is the continued development with other section faculty to make a significant contribution to further advancing our engineering education in Biochemistry and Protein Science via integration and reflection of the research activities into the curriculum in existing and planned study programs. The position includes involvement in course teaching and supervision of BSc, MSc and PhD students.

Candidates should hold a PhD degree or equivalent academic qualifications and relevant research experience equivalent to those obtained by holding a position as Researcher or Postdoc as well as education and experience in teaching.

The candidate should also have:
  • Experience with analysis of protein-protein and protein carbohydrate interactions in fundamental and applied research
  • “Hands-on” experience with biophysical techniques such as X-ray crystallography and surface plasmon resonance analysis of molecular interactions
  • Experience with protein computational design and engineering using Rosetta
  • Documented research experience within protein structural biology, protein engineering and enzyme kinetics
  • Documented research experience within enzyme discovery involving phylogenetic analysis, cloning, recombinant protein production using yeast and bacterial hosts, protein purification and quality characterization
  • International and industrial collaboration experience
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English and Danish
  • Documented teaching experience

In the assessment of the candidates, consideration will be given to:

  • Experience and quality of teaching, and ability to contribute to continuous development of teaching
  • Research experience
  • Research vision and potential
  • Societal impact
  • Documented innovation activities, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
  • International experience
  • Internal and external collaboration
  • Communication skills
  • Track record in attracting funding to the research area
