DTU Space (the National Danish Space Institute at the Technical University of Denmark) is offering a PhD position in the area of exoplanet atmospheric research (expected to start as soon as possible) to promote self-motivated and independent students.


The successful applicant will join a newly established and growing exoplanet research group (currently comprised of four people) lead by Professor Lars A. Buchhave. The group focuses on understanding and characterizing exoplanets with a particular emphasis on the abundant small planets through two key areas of research: 1) precise mass measurements of (often transiting) planets to understand their composition and structure and 2) observation and characterization of exoplanetary atmospheres to advance our insight into their diversity and composition.


Candidates should have a master's degree in astrophysics, physics, engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree.


We are particularly looking for students interested in working on observational studies of exoplanet atmospheres. Students with previous background in atmospheric studies and observational techniques to characterize exoplanets atmospheres (e.g., transit spectroscopy) will be given preference. We also give preference to students familiar to current/future observational facilities and their capabilities (e.g., JWST).

Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
