A 3-year PhD scholarship in theoretical chemistry is available starting from December 1, 2019 or as soon as possible after that date. The project will be supervised by Prof. Sonia Coriani and is funded by the DFF-FNU Research Project 2 “Developing Theoretical Beamlines for Cutting-Edge Experiments”. The successful candidate will join an ambitious international research team, which is a part of the Section of Physical and Biophysical Chemistry at DTU Chemistry.

Research in Prof. Coriani’s group focuses on the development of quantum chemical methods and corresponding computer code to reliably describe the interaction of atoms and molecules with electromagnetic radiation, and in particular new light sources. The methods are applied in contexts related to modern experiments, like non-linear optical experiments, electronic excitations through one- and two-photon mechanisms, magnetic circular dichroism, birefringence effects and chiral spectroscopies.

The PhD project targets the derivation of theoretical approaches for high-accuracy calculation of, among others, high energy x-ray spectra, photoelectron and photoionization processes, and their implementation in efficient quantum chemistry software that will enable the prediction and interpretation of the results from novel sophisticated experiments. Active dissemination of the obtained results, in scientific articles and through participation in international conferences, is an integral part of the job.

The successful candidate should have a Master’s degree in chemistry or physics with a focus on theoretical/quantum chemistry. Experience working with method development within correlated electronic structure theory, or electron and nuclear dynamics, and efficient implementation in computer codes is an advantage. Most importantly, the candidate should be highly motivated, able to work independently and should be very confident in both written and spoken English. The applicant should strive towards scientific excellence, be ambitious and hard working. Only applicants who seek to be amongst the brightest in their field and do science at the highest international level will be considered.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide.
