The Department of Wind Energy has a vacancy for a 2 year post-doctoral position in the Loads and Control Section (LAC) at DTU Risø Campus. DTU Wind Energy is a mission driven university department with a vision to be the preferred university partner for the global wind energy sector. The department creates value for society through integration of research with education, innovation and research-based consultancy within key fields central to the development and use of wind energy.


DTU Wind Energy develops state-of-the-art design methods to ensure the best performance, lowest cost and overall structural integrity of wind turbines as well as advance the design, operation and control of entire wind power plants for the future needs of the evolving energy system. This is a highly multi-disciplinary issue involving modeling of wind flow, aerodynamics, structures, controls, and more at varying levels of fidelity. LAC focuses on engineering models for loads and dynamics, aeroelastic stability, wind turbine and farm control, and wind farm design optimization, and implements its research in software tools and in courses to the benefit of the wind energy community in general.


This post-doctoral position focuses on developing and applying theoretical expertise in wind farm optimization in particular as a crucial element of the overall section and department activities in research, education and innovation.

 

Responsibilities and tasks

Your work will mainly be focused within systems engineering and optimization activities in research and commercial projects in Loads and Control Section at DTU Wind Energy. Specific tasks will include:

  • Development and adaptation of models for wind turbine and farm physics and costs for the TOPFARM wind farm optimization framework
  • Executing wind farm optimization studies in a range of applications including but not limited to: wind farm layout optimization, design of wind farm collection systems, hybrid plant sizing and physical design, etc.
  • Writing papers for conferences and journal publications, supporting development of research proposals, and participation on commercial projects for improving wind farm optimization practice by industry

In addition, you are also expected to support the activities on the overall maintenance, documentation, training and support of the TOPFARM wind farm optimization farmeork and model suite.

 

The research aims at creating new valuable knowledge within the wind farm systems engineering and optimization area and implementation of this in department activities as well as in the industry in both the short and long term. Much of our activities are performed in collaboration with the industry, as well as other Danish and foreign research institutions.

In addition, the researcher is also expected to contribute to the following tasks:

  • Contribute to the ongoing projects in LAC with reporting and administration
  • Offer support and assistance in teaching the wind energy courses relating to systems engineering and optimization and developing course materials if required
  • Supervise our wind energy master students relating to wind farm systems engineering and optimization and define the potential projects for the master students

Qualifications
The section for Loads and Control at DTU Wind Energy is looking for a post-doctoral in wind farm systems engineering and optimization with a strong academic background in optimization (particularly multi-disciplinary optimization) and its application in wind energy. The candidate must hold a PhD degree in systems engineering, aerospace engineering or relevant engineering disciplines. Industry work experience in wind energy farm design is preferable.

Experience with advanced multi-disciplinary analysis and optimization (MDAO) methods using both gradient, heuristic, meta-heuristic and mixed methods is preferable. Experience with uncertainty quantification and data-science techniques is also preferable. Additional skills of interest include:

  • Experience with Python / Julia programming languages and scientific libraries
  • Experience with OpenMDAO
  • Experience with High Performance Computing including OpenMP/MPI libraries

It is important that you are open-minded, responsible, ready to engage in a team and have good communication skills.

Salary and terms of employment

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

 
The position is a 2 year post-doctoral position.
