As postdoc in this project, you will be part of the research activities on coding for optical communication in the INCOM project funded by Innovation Fund Denmark (IFD) and positioned within the Coding and Visual Communication Group, which is part of the Communication Technology Section at DTU Fotonik.

DTU Fotonik has an international and strong cutting edge focus on optical communications and coding and as a department; it covers all areas of photonic engineering.

Responsibilities and tasks
We are seeking a candidate to work on advanced high-throughput coding for optical communication. The focus will be on fast forward error-correction (FEC). The applications include Data Center Interconnects and optical core networks.  

Error-correction codes (ECC) are vital in contemporary optical communication systems to achieve highly efficient and highly reliable communication. You will be conducting research on high-throughput, FEC for optical communication, striving for Tbit/s communication at output bit-error rates of 10
-15 and better.

For high performance, soft-decision (SD) FEC will be applied. One scheme for the research work is concatenated coding with an inner SD FEC. For high-speed and high-reliability, a fast hard-decision (HD) FEC, is a good choice for the outer code. For enhanced performance, SD decoding of the outer code will also be investigated. The goal is to design novel high-performance high-throughput coding schemes for Data Center Interconnects and optical core networks.    

The coding can include both FEC and coding for probabilistic constellation shaping, e.g. in coded modulation communication schemes using higher order modulation. The performance shall be evaluated by analysis and simulations and compared with information theoretic bounds.

Striving for Tbit/s throughput, fast algorithms are a vital part of the research. This includes analysis of the influence on the performance and potentially important implementation aspects as energy efficiency. 

The postdoc project will be part of the INCOM project centred at DTU Fotonik, and it will be in close collaboration with other coding activities within the INCOM project. Experimental lab work and demonstrations of selected devised coding schemes in optical transmission can be a part of this joint work.

Apart from the research outlined above, the postdoc position may involve a limited amount of teaching mainly in the form of supervising student projects, incl. PhD level.

Qualifications
Candidates should have: 

  • a PhD degree or equivalent within coding for communication
  • a strong background in coding for communication is required
  • experience with coding for optical communication, coded modulation, rate-adaptive probabilistic constellation shaping and high order modulation schemes is a plus

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The period of employment is one year.
