Postdoc in Energy System Modelling

The Division for Sustainability, Society & Economics at DTU Management offers a postdoc position in the Energy Economics and Modelling (EEM) section.

We are looking for a talented and highly motivated economist or engineer with an interest in participating in cutting-edge research within energy market regulation, energy systems and/or Power-to-X (PtX) modelling tools, including economic and technical aspects, as a basis to assess the possibilities for the integration of PtX in surrounding energy systems.

The research activities in the EEM section are highly interdisciplinary, and you will become part of a collaborative team effort. Our research combines competencies within energy economics, energy systems analyses, operation research, data science and socio-economic analysis. We provide tools and expertise, supporting national and international policymaking in the green transition of energy systems. The section offers an excellent research environment with international staff, postdocs, and PhD students.  

Responsibilities and qualifications
You will divide your time mainly between two related research projects funded by the European REACT Framework , ERA-Net and the Innovation Foundation respectively. The focus of both projects is, among others, to evaluate flexibility provision in the energy system and to assess the economic feasibility of PtX projects in Denmark and the potential integration into the future energy system using and improving modelling tools built in Julia (OptiPlant) and GAMS (Balmorel).

The postdoc will have two primary focus points:

  • You will explore the economic value of PtX and other values based on quantitative and qualitative methods, including energy system modelling. This will be done in close collaboration with stakeholders and project partners. In-depth assessments and co-knowledge production will be conducted e.g. in a case study of the Danish island Bornholm.  Quantitative modelling tools on costs and other impacts developed within our section will also be further developed and applied to this case study
  • In line with the research described above, you will also contribute to the development and application of methods for a cost-benefit analysis of green fuel production on energy islands,  as suggested by the Danish government
  • You will contribute to the testing and development of large-scale modelling of sector coupling and utilization of excess heat from PtX plants
  • You will evaluate the flexibility provision in the energy system and regulations supporting demand response, while guaranteeing cost-reflectiveness and social fairness

 The ideal candidate should have:

  • A PhD degree in general or energy economics, energy system analysis, or equivalent
  • Experience with modelling and quantitative analysis of the economics of energy systems including PtX and green fuel production
  • Excellent dissemination and writing skills
  • Well-developed ability to work individually and in a group
  • A willingness and desire to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Good programming capabilities in advanced analysis software (e.g., Python, R, MATLAB, GAMS or Julia)

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The period of employment is initial 1 year, starting as soon as possible (or according to mutual agreement). The position is a full-time position.
