The Water Technology section studies the sustainable treatment of water for domestic, industrial as well as agricultural use. Our work includes dealing with processes and technologies across the continuum from raw water, to potable water, to wastewater, to storm water. Both recovery of resource from used water as well as reuse of water are considered. Computational and experimental studies are conducted and research is done at the laboratory, pilot, and full scale in collaboration with other research institutes, stake holders, and end users.

The biomimetic group works on understanding membrane processes for water treatment including the use of hydraulic, osmotic or electro-chemical gradients across semipermeable membranes. Our particular focus is on new membrane designs, materials and operations.

Responsibilities and tasks

We are looking for an expert in molecular modelling who will be tasked with investigating and studying protein-ligand interactions for potential resource recovery. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with laboratory colleagues. Your tasks include

  • Setting up, running and analyzing molecular dynamics simulations on protein-ligand interactions
  • Parametrization of new residues using quantum mechanical calculations
  • Exploring new computational methodologies for studying protein-ligand interactions
  • Suggesting protein mutations and experiments for our lab-colleagues
  • Designing and planning experiments with our lab-colleagues
  • Putting results in perspective for environmental applications
  • Presentation of results and methods during professional meetings
  • Dissemination via conference contributions and scientific publications
  • Supervision of bachelor, master and PhD students

Qualifications
Candidates should have a PhD degree in molecular modelling within biomolecular science. The candidate should be driven by working in an interdisciplinary field between molecular biology and environmental technology. You are open minded and a creative thinker who likes to explore new ideas and solutions. You are focused on the process as well as the outcome, and you enjoy working on complex topics and are motivated by both individual and team accomplishments.

Qualifications for the position include
  • Experienced with the UNIX command-line and basic data manipulation
  • Programming in R and perl, python or similar
  • Experience in molecular modeling of protein systems
  • Expert knowledge in running molecular dynamics simulations
  • Experience with ligand parametrization, protein design, structure prediction or docking simulations
  • Solid understanding of experimental approaches for studying protein stability and protein-ligand interactions
  • You are a team player with excellent communication skills both spoken and written
