Network Technology and IT

Today, it is only natural that mobile phones and computers communicate via the Internet. In future, however, all types of devices in homes, companies, hospitals, etc. will be able to communicate via the Internet. For example, if our refrigerator is connected to the Internet, an app on our mobile phone can tell us what to buy. This is called the Internet of Things. The new possibilities place significant demands on the appliances and on the capacity and reliability of the Internet. In future, engineers specializing in the Internet and other communication networks will thus be faced with major challenges. As an engineer in Network Technology and IT, you can help develop the solutions.

 

What will you learn?

At the beginning of your study programme you will learn about the basic principles, methods and tools in this field. About the general principles the Internet and other modern communications networks are based on, and the principles for how information is transmitted and processed. You will also gain programming and software development competences.

Later in the programme, you will deepen your competences within one or more areas of specialization. You might work with how the communication networks of the future can transmit vast amounts of information, or how to develop software for apps and advanced Web services.

Study programme structure

The Network Technology and IT programme involves subjects such as mathematics, mobile communication, digital electronics, software development, and the Internet and other communication networks. DTU is also one of the leading universities in communication network research. You will therefore have a unique opportunity to work with the latest and most advanced technologies during your studies. DTU has even set a world record by transmitting more than 661 terabits of data per second via a fibre optic cable—corresponding to more than twice the total global Internet traffic per second.

 

Career opportunities

Engineers with expertise in the Internet and other communication networks are in high demand—and will remain so in future. This is not only true in relation to mobile operators and Internet providers—all types of companies are seeking engineers, as more and more products have to be capable of communicating. Engineers with competences in the field of Network Technology and IT will therefore be highly sought after—both in Denmark and internationally.
