Physics and Nanotechnology (TUM)

In areas such as nanotechnology and sustainable energy, there is a growing need for engineers who can combine solid scientific knowledge with extensive engineering skills. This programme will provide you with a solid knowledge and understanding of physics and nanotechnology, acquired from studies at two internationally acclaimed universities, in two great cities. You will gain a unique specialization focusing on your own interest within the mix of technology, theoretical physics and experimental techniques in modern physics.

Physics and Nanotechnology

The DTU-TUM 1:1 MSc programme in Physics and nanotechnology offers you a two year intensive exchange programme for students enrolled at either DTU or TUM. You will spend one year at TUM and one year at DTU and receive your Master’s degree from the university you are enrolled in.

The MSc programme in Physics and Nanotechnology is heavily based on research accomplishments at the two universities and brings together the best of the Physics programme at TUM and the Physics and Nanotechnology programme at DTU.

The applications include various topics, such as the development and characterization of nanostructured materials with tailor-made electrical, magnetic, optical, mechanical and chemical properties, manufacturing and integration of nano- and micro-components in systems design, medical and biological physcs, optical data processing and transfer, and the development of technologies for sourcing, storing, and converting sustainable energy.

In the course of the programme, you must carry out one or more small research projects as part of a research group either at TUM or at DTU.

After successful completion of the programme students will be awarded the Master of Science, and your diploma will have the logos of both universities and will be supplemented by a special insert which describes your participation in the DTU-TUM 1:1 master’s programme.

  • Energy Physics (including plasma physics and nanostructured materials for energy applications)
  • Nano-scale materials physics
  • Nanosystems Engineering
  • Optics, Photonics and Light Science
  • Quantum Engineering

MSc graduates in Physics and Nanotechnology often find employment in the field of research and development in both major, well-established companies, and start-up businesses.
Advanced physics skills and the competencies acquired through the ‘Physics and Nanotechnology’ programme are applicable in a wide range of areas—for example in the energy sector as well as the software and consultancy industries. MSc graduates often find jobs that leave room for variation—where they can help plan their own work assignments, and which include some travelling.

Graduating the MSc programme with a high grade point average may qualify you for admission to PhD studies—either as an industrial PhD with concurrent employment in a company, or as a regular PhD student.

Application deadlines

The DTU-TUM Dual Degree programme is only open to students, who have been formally admitted to DTU's regular MSc in Physics and Nanotechnology programme. Therefore, it is not possible to apply for admission directly to the dual degree program. 

How to apply

  1. Fill in the application form
  2. Hand in the application form + supporting documents to DTU International Affairs Office
  3. DTU International Affairs Office will register and forward the applications to the Programme coordinator
  4. The Programme coordinator will consult their counterparts and select the most eligible students
  5. The Programme coordinator will inform DTU International Affairs Office about their decision
  6. DTU International Affairs Office will inform the students and issue Nomination Letters

Pre-approval of courses

Courses taken abroad must be approved by the DTU professor responsible for the individual 1:1 programme.

Periods abroad

For DTU students a standard period of two consecutive semesters is taken at the host institution. This can either be in the first and the second semester (master's thesis conducted at the home institution), or the third and fourth semester (master's thesis conducted at the host institution):

  • Period one: 1st + 2nd semester (master's thesis conducted at the home institution)
  • Period two: 3rd + 4th semester (master's thesis conducted at the host institution)

The standard period of study is four semesters which corresponds to 120 ECTS, consisting of three semesters of course work, and a master’s thesis that is usually written during the fourth semester.

For students enrolled at DTU the options are as follows:

Option 1: First year at DTU, second year at TUM:

  • The student must pass 30 ECTS General Competences and 30 ECTS Technology Specialization, the majority of which should be taken during the first year at DTU, but some courses can be transferred from the second year at TUM.
  • In the third semester at TUM, the students have the opportunity to attend courses and at the same time establish the research project they will pursue for their Master's thesis.The Master’s thesis is worth 30 ECTS, and the attended courses are worth up to 20 ECTS.
  • The students will have a main supervisor at DTU, an external supervisor at TUM and will eventually be required to defend their thesis at DTU.

Option 2: First year at TUM, second year at DTU:

  • During the first two semesters at TUM, and the third semester at DTU, the student must pass courses corresponding to 30 ECTS General Competences and 30 ECTS Technology Specialization.
  • The requirements for the general competence courses proving A) general engineering competences, B) experimental competences, C) numerical competences, and D) theoretical competences can be replaced by appropriate corresponding courses at TUM upon approval by the program coordinators.
  • The student will write a thesis at DTU following the usual requirements at DTU.

Study plan

As part of their application for the 1:1 MSc programme, students are asked to prepare a study plan. The study plan must be approved by both programme coordinators. The programme coordinators from each institution must approve the study plan of each student involved in the programme.

For DTU students a standard period of two consecutive semesters is taken at the host institution. This can either be in the first and the second semester (master's thesis conducted at the home institution), or the third and fourth semester (master's thesis conducted at the host institution).

Master's thesis

As described above, the master thesis is usually conducted during the fourth semester of the programme. The thesis will be conducted with co-supervision from both institutions. The thesis supervisor at the institution where the master thesis work is conducted will act as the main supervisor and will thus have the primary responsibility for the student. Local thesis rules will apply.

For DTU students, the thesis must be presented at an oral defense according to the rules and regulations of the university where the master thesis has been conducted and with the participation of both supervisors.

For DTU students, the master thesis is graded using the 7-point grading scale, with the grade appearing on the Master degree diploma. The grade will be determined by the DTU thesis supervisor, the co-supervisor and an external examiner according to the Danish rules and regulations on examination.
